Insurance For Children
Regarding "Don't Buy Into SCHIP Campaign," Tom Jackson, Oct. 28:
I am writing in response to Jackson's commentary opposing the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). As a professional in the human services field, I strongly urge our congressional representatives to reconsider their votes.
Many children suffer tremendously as a result of lack of health insurance. Children, mostly from the working class, have chronic illnesses such as asthma. Medication and treatment for these conditions are expensive. How can a parent making minimum wage afford medication and treatment for their child?
How about children with heart conditions, neurological disorders or life-threatening conditions such as cancer? How do you tell a mother that her child has to go without medical treatment?
Standard health care, a basic need for all children, should not be subject to competition, market forces and profit. Should we give in to the demands of the private insurance lobbyists and let our children go without care?
Conservative Republicans proclaim they believe in right to life. I believe this, too, but the right to life should also include helping ill children once they leave the womb.
We are the richest country in the world; there is no reason to deny a child basic health care. It also saves tax money in the long run, when children are healthy.

Much-Anticipated Read
I always anticipate reading my Pasco Tribune, as Tom Jackson will be sure to unmask the evil behind the next socialist he has discovered. On Nov. 4 I got my wish, and Jackson unmasked the evildoer of all evildoers - our Socialist Party candidate, Brian Moore ("Here Comes Our Local Socialist").
As always, his candidate for evildoer is up to his eyeball in liberal ideas - social work, environmentalism, slow growth, anti-war and military, tax the wealthy, equalize the wealth, social justice and grass-roots democracy.
Most of all, he decries the evils of corporate America, which drove our Libertarian columnist in desperation to evoke the ghost of Ayn Rand, the queen of selfishness, in hopes of driving a stake through the heart of Brian Moore.

Mind Your Mother
Regarding "Let Them Skateboard," letters, Oct. 31:
It is sad to read a letter about a son who defies and disobeys his mother by not wearing his helmet while skateboarding. It's a sure sign of the tail wagging the dog.
These skateboarders damage the sidewalks. They become a hazard to people walking and a hazard to themselves.
A belligerent child should always do one thing - mind your mama. And if he doesn't, he should have a Catholic skateboard.
