LAWRENCE, Kan. - Mario Chalmers had 23 points - and two of his team's four missed dunks - and a ragged No. 4 Kansas beat a plucky Missouri-Kansas City 85-62.

The Jayhawks (2-0) spent much of the night missing free throws and blowing assignments and led the Kangaroos (0-1) only 62-52 when Jeremiah Hartsook hit a short jumper midway through the second half.

Kansas guard Sherron Collins left the game with about 10 minutes to go with an apparent ankle injury.

GONZAGA 77, MONTANA 54: Freshman Austin Daye scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to help No. 14 Gonzaga open its season by beating Montana.

Gonzaga largely smothered the Montana offense, and Coach Mark Few was able to give plenty of minutes to his bench players.

PITTSBURGH 69, SAINT LOUIS 58: Levance Fields and freshman DuJuan Blair each scored 16 points to help No. 22 Pittsburgh hand Rick Majerus his first loss as coach of the Billikens.

STANFORD 67, UC SANTA BARBARA 48: Anthony Goods scored 10 straight points during one first-half stretch and finished with 23, and No. 23 Stanford beat UC Santa Barbara to win the Basketball Travelers Classic.

KANSAS STATE 76, PITTSBURG STATE 66: Michael Beasley scored 30 points, most of them during a critical second-half run, and No. 25 Kansas State escaped an upset against Pittsburg State.

Williams Scores 19 As FSU Women Win

TALLAHASSEE - Shante Williams scored 19 points in a limited role after having offseason hip surgery and No. 19 Florida State (2-0) scored the game's first 15 points en route to a 75-48 win over North Florida in its home opener on Sunday.

Florida State scored 29 points off 26 turnovers and outscored the undersized Ospreys 32-14 in the paint. The Seminoles shot 53 percent from the field and held North Florida (0-1) to just 30 percent shooting.

STANFORD 60, RUTGERS 58: Candice Wiggins hit two free throws with a tenth of a second left to lift No. 7 Stanford over No. 3 Rutgers.

With the game tied at 58, Essence Carson missed a 3-pointer with 5 seconds left. Stanford grabbed the rebound and the ball ended up in Wiggins' hand. Prince grabbed her, sending the preseason All-American to the free-throw line. Wiggins confidently hit both free throws.

TENNESSEE 76, CHATTANOOGA 56: Candace Parker scored 23 points and had five steals, and No. 1 Tennessee opened the season with a win over Chattanooga.

Freshman Vicki Baugh added 11 points, and freshman Angie Bjorklund became only the 11th Lady Vol to start the first game of her career and finished with eight points.

CONNECTICUT 98, STONY BROOK 35: Freshman Maya Moore had 21 points and 10 rebounds in her college debut Sunday, leading No. 2 Connecticut to a rout of Stony Brook in the season opener.

Mel Thomas also scored 21, including five 3-pointers for the Huskies, who have won their last 199 home games against unranked teams.

MARYLAND 76, OKLAHOMA 66: Marissa Coleman had 20 points and 12 rebounds and No. 4 Maryland beat No. 6 Oklahoma in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic.

Laura Harper added 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Terrapins (2-0), who shot nearly 46 percent, led by 24 and took command by outscoring the Sooners 30-9 during the final 12 minutes of the first half.

LSU 73, TCU 54: Sylvia Fowles had 16 points and six rebounds to lead No. 5 LSU over TCU in the second round of the Preseason WNIT.

NORTH CAROLINA 75, ARIZONA STATE 60: Erlana Larkins had 20 points and 11 rebounds to help No. 8 North Carolina beat No. 12 Arizona State in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic.

GEORGIA 84, GEORGE MASON 56: Tasha Humphrey dominated the inside with 21 points and Ashley Houts controlled the perimeter with 17 points and seven steals to lead No. 9 Georgia to a victory over George Mason.

DUKE 57, DENVER 37: Abby Waner scored 16 points and No. 10 Duke used a 19-0 run in the second half to pull away from Denver.

BAYLOR 89, PRAIRIE VIEW 61: Danielle Wilson and Rachel Allison each scored 17 points to lead No. 15 Baylor to a win over Prairie View in the Basketball Travelers Tip-Off Tournament.

OHIO STATE 63, MARIST 57: Marscilla Packer scored 26 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead No. 16 Ohio State over Marist, the team that ended the Buckeyes' NCAA Tournament hopes last season.

MICHIGAN STATE 73, EVANSVILLE 53: Allyssa DeHaan had 16 points, including her first collegiate 3-pointer, and blocked eight shots to help balanced Michigan State beat Evansville in the second round of the Preseason WNIT.

PENN STATE 80, PITTSBURGH 74: Tyra Grant scored 19 points and Mashea Williams and Kam Gissendanner each added 16 as Penn State upset No. 20 Pittsburgh to win the WBCA Classic.

TEXAS 92, MISSOURI STATE 55: Brittainey Raven scored 22 points and Texas gave Gail Goestenkors her first victory in burnt orange against Missouri State in the Longhorns' season opener.

VANDERBILT 68, FURMAN 51: Christina Wirth scored 17 points to lead No. 23 Vanderbilt over Furman.
