Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum is committed to helping Martin Lee Anderson's family continue any investigation into the teen's death, according to a statement released by McCollum and family attorney Benjamin Crump today.
Anderson, 14, died after being restrained and struck by drill instructors at a Panhandle boot camp while a nurse looked on, occasionally checking his vital signs. The confrontation was captured by a surveillance camera.
A Bay County jury found the seven guards and the nurse not guilty in October.
The Florida Legislature agreed to pay Anderson's family $5 million this year to settle civil claims.
"We intend to pursue every possible consequence for the individuals who were involved in this situation, including the guards, the nurse and the medical examiner," said Crump, the attorney for Anderson's parents, Robert Anderson and Gina Jones.
McCollum said that although "there are no further civil or criminal actions" his office can pursue, he has promised to keep the resources of his office at the family's disposal.
"I am committed to assisting the family identify new avenues of justice and calling upon the appropriate licensing authorities to either initiate or continue any investigations that will hold the parties at fault, particularly the guards and the nurse, responsible for their actions," McCollum said.
