The ammonia leak in Riverview has forced school officials to close Riverview Elementary School.

Classes at Riverview Elementary are canceled, school board spokesman Steve Hegarty said. However, if parents have child care issues, their children can go to Spoto High School at 8538 Eagle Palm Drive in Riverview. Children can catch their regular bus, which will take them to Spoto, or parents can drive their children to Spoto.

Teachers will be at Spoto to coordinate the students' arrival and arrange activities. The Hillsborough County School Board will provide buses to transport any students who mistakenly arrive at Riverview Elementary and will make sure those students get to Spoto.

Riverview Elementary students' attendance records will not be affected if they do not report to Spoto today, Hegarty said.

Two private schools have also closed. Children's First Academy's director Krista Morton said parents can call that school's voicemail at (813) 671-9003 for details. David Stone, the director of Center Academy, said classes are canceled today. He expects Center Academy to reopen Wednesday.
