ZEPHYRHILLS - Anyone with ideas about the future shape of State Road 54 can share them with state officials today during an informal hearing about plans for widening the highway between Curley and Morris Bridge roads.
The drop-in hearing starts at 4 p.m. at The Links at Lake Bernadette, 5430 Links Lane. The Links is the clubhouse for the Lake Bernadette golf course. Turn onto Golf Links Boulevard from either Eiland Boulevard or State Road 54.
The hearing is part of the Florida Department of Transportation's planning and environmental assessment for widening the highway, which is a crucial link between east Pasco County and Interstate 75.
State planners will be on hand to listen to suggestions for improvements to the road. The DOT will have on display different configurations for the 4.5-mile highway segment, which will go from two lanes to four or six.
County officials have put a four-lane version of the road into their long-range plans to be built after 2016.
According to the current schedule, DOT engineers will begin designing the improvements in 2011. So far, there's no money budgeted for buying right of way or building the wider roadway, DOT officials say. The widening between Curley and Morris Bridge will be the second phase of improvements for S.R. 54. County and state officials plan to begin widening the road between I-75 and Curley next year.
