SARASOTA COUNTY - An 87-year-old woman found dead inside of a trash can earlier this week suffocated, authorities said today.
Prelimary reports from the Medical Examiner's Office said Margaret Hutchinson died naturally of positional asphyxia, which happens when a person's body is positioned in a way that prevents them from breathing.
Sarasota Sheriff's Office Lt. Paul Richard said Huchinson appeared to have fallen backward into the trash can. Her body folded in half inside the tight space and she could not breath, Richard said.
"She was bottom first with her hands and feet out of the trash can," Richard said. "It's very strange and it's honestly a horrific accident. You can only image how horrified her family is."
Deputies went to the home Sunday to check on Hutchinson after her daughter called to say she had not heard from her, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office said.
