TRINITY - Students at J.W. Mitchell High School appear to understand the idea of making lemonade when life hands over lemons.
Only in their case they were handed a garbage can.
What to do with it? Make a mouse hole, of course.
That hole will be a prop in the Mitchell drama department's production of "Alice in Wonderland," which begins its three-day run today.
Objects like that garbage can turned mouse hole fit in nicely with the play's light tone.
"We've been doing a lot of heavy drama," said director and teacher Chris Fickley. "We wanted to give them something nice and fun."
Sets are minimal, he said, but will include a tree and a mushroom made by Mitchell art students. Instead, the production will emphasize costuming.
The play has been adapted for the theater from the classic work of Lewis Carroll by Eva Le Gallienne and Florida Friebus.
Mitchell's student actors have enjoyed delving into Carroll's rich fantasy world, Fickley said, and he suspects audiences will, too.
"People have always wanted to escape," he said.
Performances are at 7:30 p.m. today, Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Performing Arts Center at River Ridge on the middle/high school campus, 11646 Town Center Road, New Port Richey.
Tickets at $6 are available at the door. For more information, call (727) 774-9358.
