Injury-Riddled Colts Put Freeney On IR

Published: November 15, 2007

INDIANAPOLIS - Dwight Freeney's season is over, and now Simeon Rice has a chance to start anew in Indianapolis.

Freeney, the three-time Pro Bowl defensive end and highest-paid defender in the league, was placed on injured reserve Wednesday by the Colts. He's scheduled to undergo surgery later this week or early next week on his injured left foot.

The blow is potentially devastating to Indianapolis, which has already been depleted by injuries. Seven starters missed Sunday's game in San Diego, and Indianapolis lost four more starters, including Freeney, during the game.

Freeney injured the foot while making a spin move during the fourth quarter of Sunday's 23-21 loss.

To help fill the void, the AFC South-leading Colts claimed Rice, a two-time All-Pro defensive end and former Buc, off waivers Monday. Rice spent the first half of the season with Denver.

Williams Can Return; Miami Names Beck QB

DAVIE - Ricky Williams' 1 1/2 -year suspension ended Wednesday when he was reinstated by the NFL. The announcement came only hours after Miami Dolphins coach Cam Cameron decided to give the quarterback job to rookie John Beck, who will make his NFL debut Sunday at Philadelphia.

Williams, the 2002 NFL rushing champion, has played in only 12 games since the start of the 2004 season. He was scheduled to fly to South Florida for a physical today and meet with Cameron, said Williams' agent, Leigh Steinberg.

Beck, a second-round draft pick from BYU, will become the 12th quarterback to start for the Dolphins since Dan Marino retired following the 1999 season.

BEARS: Rex Grossman has his job back as the starting quarterback, replacing injured Brian Griese for Sunday's game at Seattle.

BILLS: Running back Marshawn Lynch missed practice because of a severely sprained left ankle, and is unlikely to play Sunday when Buffalo hosts New England.

RAIDERS: Daunte Culpepper moved back into the starting quarterback role for the Oakland Raiders just in time to face one of his former teams, the Minnesota Vikings.

RAVENS: Two years after being displaced as the team's starting quarterback, Kyle Boller is again in charge of running the offense.

REDSKINS: Receiver Brandon Lloyd broke his collarbone in practice and will be sidelined at least six weeks.
