Payne Sisters Leave Sickles Soccer Team
Shelby and Sydney Payne, members of last year's United States U-14 national developmental team, have left the Sickles High School girls soccer team two weeks into the season.
The twins' father, Mark Payne, confirmed his daughters are "no longer with Sickles" via phone Tuesday night.
Sickles coach George Arroyo said earlier in the day that the girls were taking time off due to issues with their knees.
Payne said he had no comment as to why his daughters were not going to play at Sickles, although he did say Shelby and Sydney would be playing in the Region III U-14 soccer tournament this week.
Sickles is currently 2-1 on the season with wins against Brandon and Leto.
FEST COMMITS: Jesuit senior baseball player Matt Fest has verbally committed to Chipola Junior College, Tigers coach Richie Warren said Wednesday.
Fest, a catcher, finished his junior season second on the team in batting average (.348), and home runs (four) and third in doubles (seven) and RBIs (22) among regular starters. He was a Tribune All-Hillsborough County honorable-mention selection.
JORDAN CHANGES MIND: Berkeley Prep coach Kevin Rosepapa said Tuesday night that senior swimmer Jonathan Jordan had verbally committed to the University of Florida.
"He's going to Florida," Rosepapa said.
Earlier this week it appeared as if Jordan was on his way to the University of Virginia. Rosepapa said Jordan reconsidered his commitment to Virginia after a conversation with the Florida coaching staff.
Because Jordan took his decision down to the wire, he wasn't able to sign his letter-of-intent Wednesday but, along with swimmer Gina Meyer (Florida International) will sign the documents today.
SO DOES HOFFMAN: Academy of the Holy Names rower Shannon Hoffman was all set to sign with Wisconsin, but she's now had a change of heart. Holy Names athletic director Pete Young said he spoke with Hoffman's father Wednesday and learned the rowing standout is now going to sign with Clemson.
Young said the Hoffman family was awaiting paperwork from the Tigers' program and was unsure when Hoffman would finalize the scholarship.
