LAKELAND - The Plant and Bayshore Christian volleyball teams reassured the state of Florida that they are the top teams in their classifications Thursday after capturing the Class 5A and 1A state titles at The Lakeland Center.

Duke-bound senior setter Kellie Catanach led the top-ranked and nationally ranked Panthers with 36 assists, 21 digs and eight kills against Tallahassee Leon to give Plant its second consecutive 5A state title and seventh overall. Sophomore middle hitter Maddie Martin and junior outside hitter Danielle Erb had 11 kills each for the Plant.

Senior Jannica Mollett led the Faith Warriors with 22 kills and 23 digs against top-ranked Daytona Warner Christian to give Bayshore its fourth 1A state title since 1998. Bayshore finished the season No. 2 in the 1A state poll.

Durant can become the third Hillsborough County team to win a state title this season. It plays Jupiter in the 6A semifinals tonight at 8.
