BELLEAIR - Apparently taking advantage of the slumping real estate market, British racer Nigel Mansell has purchased a $4 million waterfront mansion here for nearly $3.3 million, public records show.

Mansell, the former Formula One great, and his wife, Rosanne, closed Nov. 2 on the 6,146-square-foot estate in Belleview Island, a gated community of 31 homes overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway, records show.

The recorded warranty deed by seller Barbara Ann Chapman shows the Mansells paid $22,982 in state documentary stamp taxes, which equates to a purchase price of $3.28 million.

The estate, at 429 St. Andrews Drive, was listed for $3.99 million. The current market value is $4.28 million, according to the Pinellas County property appraiser's office.

The two-story home has four bedrooms and six bathrooms and features marble floors, a 15-foot fully equipped bar, Italian crystal chandeliers, a dock, pool house with custom outdoor kitchen and a large laundry room, sound system and three-car garage, the listing shows.

The listing's agent, Martha Thorn of Coldwell Banker, could not be immediately reached.

Mansell lived in Clearwater before selling his estate there for $6.5 million in 1996. Last month, the Mansells sold their Woodbury Park hotel, golf and country club complex in southwest England, according to reports published in the United Kingdom.
