In 2006, St. Petersburg police thought a newspaper delivery man was fatally shot during a violent home invasion above his apartment.
Police now say the neighbors of 70-year-old Robert Lee Davis fabricated the story.
John Alexis Felicie
John Alexis Felicie, 21, accidentally discharged a handgun he was showing to his friend who lived above Davis, said St. Petersburg police spokesman Bill Proffitt.
Felicie, 7500 121st Ave. in Largo, was charged today with manslaughter and with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. He is being held in the Pinellas County Jail without bond on a probation violation for a Hillsborough County possession of cocaine charge.
Anthony Kelly, 22, who lived above Davis' three-bedroom apartment at 4642 1/2 19th Ave. S., told officers in 2006 he and his girlfriend were in his apartment when two armed masked men broke through the front door. Kelly said he struggled with one men and the gun fired downward into the floor.
Investigators say Felicie and Kelly went downstairs after the gun went off and found Davis dead in his bed. Proffitt said both men were on probation at the time and wanted to avoid more jail time.
Davis lived alone but was within a short drive from his ailing wife, who was being cared for by relatives in a South St. Petersburg house.
Kelly violated his probation for a 2003 offense and is in state prison in Jackson County.
