A Tomlin Middle School science teacher was arrested this morning in Gibsonton on a felony DUI charge.
At 1:10 a.m., a Hillsborough County deputy spotted Roger K. Roberts Jr., 44, of Brandon, asleep behind the wheel of a 2003 Honda sport utility vehicle stopped at U.S. 41 and Symmes Road, the report states.
Deputies said Roberts had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech and that his breath smelled of alcohol. He submitted to a breath test, and the result was a blood-alcohol reading of 0.19 percent. Florida law judges a driver impaired with a level of 0.08 or greater.
The arrest was at least the fourth time the teacher has been charged with driving under the influence, according to the arrest report, which makes it a felony.
He was in Orient Road Jail, with bail set at $2,000.
After learning of Roberts' arrest, the school district placed him on paid leave pending review of the allegations, spokeswoman Linda Cobbe said.
His personnel file indicates that his last arrest on a DUI charge was in 1997, she said.
