HUDSON - A gunshot from a .22-caliber rifle penetrated a Hudson mobile home Saturday, wounding an 11-year-old girl, the Pasco County Sheriff's Office reports.
The child was taken to Bayonet Point Hospital by her father, where she was treated and released, according to relatives and sheriff's spokesman Doug Tobin.
According to the report, around 5 p.m., a group of adults was shooting at chickens about 40 yards away from the victim's mobile home, 17028 Harmony Drive. One shot entered the mobile home, striking the girl in the back, the report said.
Stephanie Tosches, who said she is the child's aunt and legal guardian, identified the girl as Christal Gordon, a Hudson Middle School sixth grader.
"It came right through my bedroom wall," Tosches said of the gunshot. Her niece was retrieving Halloween candy from a jar when "she felt something hit her in the back. She took a step out of my bedroom and fell to the floor," Tosches said. The child was home Saturday evening. "She's resting well," Tosches said.
Authorities plan to refer the case to the state attorney's office for possible culpable negligence charges, Tobin said.
