Buying a few staples for Thanksgiving Day? Prices overall are lower now than six weeks ago, but availability problems can push prices back up. The Tampa Tribune checked prices at five Tampa grocers during the past six weeks and found that sometimes, pricey organic produce or larger packages were the only options available.
The 12 items priced were turkey, ham, sweet and baking potatoes, broccoli, white wine, dinner rolls, milk, eggs, fried onions, gravy and pumpkin pie filling. When possible, exact brands and sizes were compared. The totals below are calculated using the cheapest meat prices available at that store, and assume the cost of a 10-pound turkey, a 5-pound ham and 3 pounds each of sweet and baking potatoes.
