LARGO - The last time these teams met, Largo dominated and didn't allow East Lake to score. In Friday night's playoff game, East Lake scored, but Largo still dominated, winning 19-7 to advance in the Class 5A playoffs.
With the win, Largo advances to play Dunedin on Friday.
East Lake's game plan was to stifle Largo running back Brynn Harvey, the regular-season Pinellas County rushing leader (2,043 yards). The plan worked as East Lake held Harvey to 88 yards on 14 carries. However, Largo went to the air to score three touchdowns. The first was from Largo wide receiver Shane Hood, a 27-yard touchdown catch that tied the score just before half.
After an evenly matched first half, Largo went back to testing the East Lake secondary. It paid off as 12 points were scored in the third quarter with great play execution.
"Just make the catch, don't drop it," went through the mind of Largo wide receiver Reginald McCray on his second touchdown reception in the third quarter. The play also featured dazzling scrambling ability by quarterback Leonard Marshall, who found the time around his offensive line's protection to connect with McCray for the 42-yard TD.
After a cold start, Largo's defense turned things in its favor recording eight sacks on the evening while holding East Lake to less than 100 yards of offense. East Lake's only score was on its second possession of the night, a 2-yard Erin Murray touchdown run up the middle. East Lake quarterback Blake Robles threw for 52 yards.
