DUNEDIN - Dunedin running back Adaris Bellamy scored four touchdowns, three in the second half, and ran for 248 yards to lead the host Falcons' rally for a 31-17 Class 5A region quarterfinal win Friday against Gibbs.
Bellamy scored on runs of 24, 1, 14 and 55 yards. The last score put the game out of reach with 56 seconds left in regulation. Bellamy was able to run for 248 yards despite only carrying the ball eight times for 78 yards in the first half. Of his 28 carries, six were double-digit runs, five of which were at least 20 yards.
The win for Dunedin sets up a delicious rematch of arguably the best Pinellas County game this season when Largo beat Dunedin 37-31 in double overtime.
Unlike in previous games this season, Bellamy didn't try to be elusive in the backfield. Rather, he bulldozed his way through the line, the few times there weren't any holes, lowering his shoulder and punishing would-be defenders.
"Our line was just pushing them back, so we just capitalized off our line," Bellamy said. He dismissed the significance of a more determined style of running saying, "Nah, not really. It has always been my style. I just brought it out tonight.
"It was just speed on speed and I wanted to beat them to the outside. If I would have tried to reverse field, I would have just lost yards. I trusted my line."
"What a great second half, he just dipped his shoulder and quit trying to juke kids," Dunedin coach Mark Everett said.
