A University of Florida sorority that reportedly caused trouble, damage and fights at the Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City last month has been sanctioned by its national office.
In a news release Friday, Zeta Tau Alpha officers said the Gamma Iota chapter would be placed under "risk management supervision."
"It is our desire to send a clear message to the chapter regarding our concern," Stacey Verkest Voigt, vice president collegiate for the southeastern United States, said in the statement.
The sanctions are:
•All social events will be alcohol free until further notice.
•The chapter is barred from having events outside Gainesville for the rest of the school year.
•All sorority members must complete an online alcohol-abuse prevention program in the spring.
•The sorority will participate in a "risk management education program."
A manager at the Columbia wrote to University of Florida President Bernie Machen that about 250 members of the sorority and their dates arrived Oct. 11 "in an intoxicated state," that police had to be called to break up a fight, that members of the visiting group broke a toilet and a men's room baby-changing table and vomited in various parts of the restaurant.
