Has anyone else noticed how well-planned Tampa International Airport is? Not just the way it's laid out, although it's got to be one of the most compact airports in the country. Everything is a short walk away.
I'm talking about planning in the medium-to-long range. For example, the connector currently under construction has caused a minimum of traffic disruption and construction is proceeding ahead of schedule. Contrast that with the Interstate 4/Interstate 275 interchange or the Crosstown Expressway.
Most recently, siting has begun for a light-rail connection to the airport, a given in any transportation plan. The transportation plan is still a long way from reality, but when its time comes, the airport will be ready. And nothing will need to be torn out or built around to get it done.
I don't know if the credit for strategic planning should go to Director Louis Miller and his staff or to the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority - or both. Whoever is responsible gets my thanks for serving as a shining example to other public agencies. I hope they're paying attention.
