NEW PORT RICHEY - Five Lutheran churches will close their doors Sunday so their congregations can join together at King of Glory Lutheran Church.
First Lutheran Church of New Port Richey, Joyful Spirit Lutheran, Immanuel Lutheran, All Saints Lutheran and King of Kings Lutheran will gather at King of Glory Lutheran for a joint service, which is being called "Weave Us Together."
The churches are members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's Florida/Bahamas Synod. The congregations are working together on a combined ministry plan, hoping to merge their plans, ideas, and resources to better serve the community.
"It really is a wonderful idea," said the Rev. Gary Logan, pastor of King of Glory Lutheran. "It will help people from all the churches to help the most in the community."
Plans have been under way for several months for the day of unified worship. A planning committee of about 25 people representing the six churches has been preparing for 600 worshippers.
The service will involve deacons and dozens of lay volunteers from the churches, along with the churches' adult and children's choirs and praise bands. A mime troupe will perform, and members of the churches' clown ministries will present a children's sermon.
Multicolored cloth bracelets, made with colors representing each of the churches, will be given to everyone who attends Sunday.
"This special service will provide our folks the best that we can offer in both contemporary and traditional styles," said Jerry Nordsiek, pastor of Joyful Spirit Lutheran. "This is a start enabling us to celebrate ministries we can do together."
In keeping with the day's theme of service, offerings not designated for a particular church will go to a local spousal abuse center, and Jerry Wahl, the synod's mission outreach director, will preach.
Members of Boy Scout Troop 60 will help with parking. People are being encouraged to carpool, and a parking lot on Floramar Terrace and U.S. 19 will be available for overflow.
Pit Boss Restaurant and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will provide a barbecue lunch after the service. Church members will bring homemade desserts.
