LAND O' LAKES - A fire swept through a two-story house in Caliente Resort on Friday afternoon, causing extensive damage to the structure and to a motor home in the garage.
Flames shot out of the roof as Pasco County firefighters battled the blaze at 21140 Los Cabos Court before bringing it under control. Smoke could be seen from U.S. 41, and the odor of smoke was evident blocks away.
Pasco Fire Rescue reported receiving the call about the fire at 12:08 p.m. Investigators were trying to determine the cause.
A man and woman who lived in the house escaped without injury and watched from across the street as at least five fire trucks arrived, blocking much of the road. They would not comment.
Two workers putting finishing touches on a newly built house next door said they tried to help when the man attempted to fight the fire with a garden hose.
Bob Kay of J & E Cabinets in Hudson said he and Jack Moose of Jack Moose Trim Inc. were preparing the house next door for new homeowners who were to move in this weekend.
Kay said he heard a man shouting about the fire and they rushed outside to see the man getting the hose ready.
Kay said the man pulled the hose so hard that the connection broke off, so they then tried to hook the hose to another house.
"It was too late," Kay said. "It went up real quick."
