HUDSON - Thanks to nearly 10 years of national television commercials, most Americans probably would recognize Jared Fogle, the Indianapolis man who lost about 240 pounds in 12 months, thanks to a diet of Subway sandwiches.
As remarkable as Fogle's weight loss is that he has been able to maintain a weight around 195 pounds that comfortably fits his 6-foot-2-inch frame.
On Friday, the weight-loss hero spoke at a health rally at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point. The rally celebrated the hospital's involvement in today's Nature Coast Start Heart Walk at The Rotary Pavilion at The Concourse, 15325 Alric Pottburg Road, Shady Hills.
The pavilion is about a quarter-mile west of the Suncoast Parkway on State Road 52. The walk benefits the American Heart Association, and is sponsored by. The Tampa Tribune. For details, visit americanheart.org /naturecoastwalk or call (727) 563-8107.
"It used to just be the Heart Walk, but we added 'Start' this year, because we want to help people start to make healthy changes," said Kate Sawa, a communications director with the American Heart Association.
Fogle will emcee the event, which starts at 8 a.m. Bonnie Rigsby, a nurse who lost 135 pounds, is expected to speak. The event will feature 1- and 3-mile walks.
While Subway sandwiches were instrumental in his weight loss, Fogle said he also walked about 30 minutes a day. After 10 years, his regimen still works.
"I still eat at Subway two or three times a week," he said. "With my job, it's easy. I don't eat other fast food. I'll splurge every now and then, but I realized that when I eat at a restaurant, whatever they put in front of me isn't a single serving.
"It's all about moderation."
