Editor's note: Attorney General Bill McCollum's office provided this rebuttal:
The Florida Attorney General's Office has been in communication with Dr. Marvin Dunn for several months and after careful consideration and an extensive review, has declined to open a new investigation into the 1944 death of Willie James Howard at this time.
Our office communicated this decision to Dr. Dunn in a face-to-face meeting in August and invited him to work with the office to explore other ways in which he might work with the Attorney General's Office of Civil Rights to increase public awareness of the tragic circumstances surrounding Willie James Howard's death and the inadequacies of the justice system at the time.
Dr. Dunn declined the offer from the Attorney General's Office and to date has not provided any additional information to the office, despite repeated offers to work together on this and other civil rights issues.
