PLANT CITY - More than 10,000 people were expected for Saturday's Plant City Pig Jam, now in its fifth year, event organizers said. More than 80 barbecue teams from across the country signed up to compete for cash and prizes at the event at the Randy L. Larson Softball Four-Plex, adjacent to Plant City Stadium.
The Pig Jam included children's games, music and of course, samples of barbecue beef, brisket, chicken, pork and ribs.
Barbecue teams competed in professional, amateur and children's divisions. The Pig Jam is sponsored by the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce.
Plant City residents Mark Poppell and Fred Williams came up with the idea for the Pig Jam after visiting a similar event, the 2001 Big Pig Jig in Vienna, Ga.
