GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Fred Everson.

There was great weather for anglers last week with the exception of Friday, when the wind howled out of the north. Clear water and a minus tide made for nice mornings.

On Monday, I waded the bar in front of Mag's Hole and hooked a 25-inch redfish on a fly. I saw several more fish but couldn't get a bite on the streamer.

The next day I started early on the 6-foot line in front of the Simmons Park boat ramp. There were birds working the surface, and my guess was ladyfish, but they turned out to be Spanish mackerel in the 26-inch class. I put one fish on ice, then headed north to look for redfish.

A light breeze out of the north made poling easy but I didn't see a lot of fish - mostly singles and pairs. The few I got close enough to throw to were hungry and I caught an oversized redfish and a 26-inch snook on a plastic mullet. Both fish were in 18 inches of water over bare sand.

Captain Chet Jennings fished Thursday and said he had a good day wading redfish at Big Pass and also in front of Mag's Hole.

Captain Mark Noe of Apollo Beach reported a great day fishing artificials between Piney Point and Terra Ceia Bay. He said he and his client, John Burger from MacDill Air Force Base, caught trout, snook, ladyfish, flounder and other fish on plugs and jigs.
