TAMPA - A Hillsborough County elementary schoolteacher is free on $500 bail this morning after being charged Sunday with misdemeanor driving under the influence while driving with her 3-year-old son.
Catharine Wind
Hillsborough County deputies did not arrest Catharine Wind, 40, of Valrico, on any type of child-endangerment charge, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.
"It's the deputy's discretion. They got the father on the phone, and he responded immediately and picked up the child," Carter said.
Wind teaches fifth grade at Yates Elementary School in Brandon, school district spokeswoman Linda Cobbe said. She has been employed with the school district since August 1994, Cobbe said.
According to an arrest affidavit, deputies arrested Wind about 4:45 p.m. Sunday after noticing her "swerving all over Falkenburg Road." When she stopped, she drove up onto a sidewalk, the affidavit states.
The level of alcohol in Wind's breath registered at .20, the affidavit states. Under Florida law, a person is presumed intoxicated at a level of .08.
