Rivalry Weekend is approaching. Games will be played around the nation in which the institutions, to put it mildly, do not care for one another.
Doubly so in Gainesville.
Florida-Florida State (Florida State-Florida, if you desire). A rivalry that is unrivaled in these parts.
It starts Friday night (8, FSN Florida) when the men's basketball teams tip off at a sold-out O'Connell Center.
Assuming both are victorious Tuesday - the Gators host North Florida and the Seminoles welcome Georgia State - the teams will meet with a combined 9-2 record. FSU enters Tuesday's game 3-2, Florida 4-0.
Records on the hardwood aside, the main event comes Saturday (5 p.m., WTSP, Channel 10) at Florida Field in the regular-season finale for both football teams.
There are no national implications, a rarity in this series. But you can expect a backyard brawl for bragging rights, which the Gators have owned of late, having won each of the past three meetings.
After all, in these parts, this is still as big as it gets.
