CLEARWATER - Hercules Avenue is expected to be shut down until at least noon today after an accident involving a flatbed truck left a 45-year-old man in critical condition, authorities say.
At 8:25 a.m., a truck collided with a car just south of Palmetto Street, said Elizabeth Daly-Watts, a Clearwater public safety spokeswoman.
The driver of the car was flown by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center and is in critical condition, she said. The driver of the truck was not injured.
About 10 to 12 gallons of diesel fuel spilled on the roadway as a result of the collision, and that will be cleaned up by hazardous materials workers, Daly-Watts said.
Also, 85 gallons of diesel fuel will be pumped out of the flatbed truck into another vehicle, she said.
