The 60th wedding anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip is also an occasion to be thankful for her long and devoted service to the nation and Commonwealth, the archbishop of Canterbury said Monday.
Archbishop Rowan Williams, speaking to the royal couple and 2,000 guests at a thanksgiving service at Westminster Abbey, said Tuesday's diamond anniversary was a milestone in her commitment to her role.
The queen, then Princess Elizabeth, married Philip at the abbey on Nov. 20, 1947. She became queen in 1952, following the death of her father, George VI.
"We can give special thanks for the very public character of the witness and the sign offered to us by this marriage, and what it has meant to nation and Commonwealth over the decades," the archbishop said.
Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, Prince William and Prince Harry were among those attending the service.
Star Charged With Public Drunkenness
Irish actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers, star of the Henry VIII soap opera "The Tudors," has been charged with public drunkenness and breach of the peace at Dublin Airport, police said Monday.
Rhys Meyers, 30, was arrested Sunday after police twice confronted him over his erratic, abusive behavior at an airport gate and at a desk of the British airline BMI, on which he was planning to fly to London.
Dublin Airport Police said they called Ireland's national police force, the Garda Siochana, after Rhys Meyers refused repeated requests to calm down.
Police charged him with two counts of violating the Public Order Act, then permitted him to pay an undisclosed cash bail on condition he return to Dublin District Court on Dec. 5 for his arraignment.
Rhys Meyers - who was admitted to a California alcoholism-treatment clinic in April and checked out the next month - was in Dublin to appear on "Tubridy Tonight," a Saturday night national talk show to promote his new film, "August Rush," co-starring Robin Williams.
Kidman Testifies About Pursuit
Nicole Kidman told a courtroom Monday how she was reduced to tears and feared a car accident when a celebrity photographer pursued her two years ago.
Kidman, who divides her time between Los Angeles and her hometown of Sydney, Australia, was testifying in the photographer's defamation suit against a Sydney newspaper that slammed him for allegedly hounding the Oscar-winning actress.
Kidman described hunkering down in a car's back seat in January 2005 to try to avoid being spotted by photographer Jamie Fawcett. She said the trip quickly turned into a hair-raising chase as a vehicle carrying Fawcett and another vehicle lurched through traffic around Kidman's car.
"I was frightened, and I was worried there was going to be an accident," Kidman said.
Fawcett, a well-known celebrity photographer in Sydney, is suing The Sun-Herald newspaper for defamation over an article that said he was Sydney's most disliked freelance photographer and was determined to "wreak havoc" on Kidman's private life.
