TAMPA - A Tampa Fire Rescue vehicle was involved in a serious wreck this afternoon near the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Albany Avenue.
According to Tampa Fire Rescue, two paramedics based at the West Tampa station were on their way to answer a nonemergency medical call just before 1:45 p.m. when their vehicle, Rescue 9, hit a 1995 Buick that pulled out of a parking lot and into traffic.
The driver of the Buick, 55-year-old Robert Clenenden, was seriously injured. He was treated at the scene by paramedics, including the two who were involved in the accident, Emanuel Sims Jr., 35, and Mike Veach, 43.
Clenenden was later taken to St. Joseph's Hospital. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the wreck, according to Tampa Fire Rescue.
Neither Sims nor Veach was hurt. Damage to the rescue vehicle was estimated at about $10,000, and the Buick appears to be totaled.
A different paramedic unit was sent to the original call.
The accident shut down the westbound lanes and all but one of the eastbound lanes of King Boulevard for about two hours.
