Published: November 20, 2007

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - UCLA freshman Kevin Love is proving to be a quick learner.

Love adjusted after being frustrated by Maryland's early physical play, scoring 18 points and grabbing 16 rebounds to help second-ranked UCLA overcome a sloppy first half in a 71-59 victory over Maryland on Monday night in the semifinals of the CBE Classic.

UCLA (4-0) had just eight scholarship players in uniform due to injuries to several key players and it showed early with numerous turnovers and bad shots. But the Bruins, led by Love's crisp passing against Maryland's press, settled things down by the second half.

MARQUETTE 74, CHAMINADE 63: Jerel McNeal scored eight of his 22 points in a late 11-2 run that let No. 11 Marquette hold off upset-minded Chaminade in the opening round of the EA Sports Maui Invitational.

McNeal keyed the deciding run with a tip-in of a missed free throw and three baskets on the break to let the Golden Eagles get some breathing room and avoid the upset.

DUKE 83, PRINCETON 61: Freshman forward Kyle Singler had 21 points and 12 rebounds and No. 13 Duke kept its perfect record on Maui intact with a victory over Princeton in the opening round of the EA Sports Maui Invitational.

Duke, which won the title here in 1992, 1997 and 2001, is 10-0 on the island and six of the wins have been by 20 points or more. The Blue Devils had that big a lead against Princeton seven minutes into this game.

USF SIGNING: Pensacola Junior College sophomore Lasha Parghalava, a 6-foot-2 guard, signed with the University of South Florida Monday, Pensacola coach Paul Swanson said.

A two-year starter, Parghalava is averaging 14 points and three assists this season after averaging 12 points last season.

"He has a nice mid-range game and can take it to the rack," Swanson said. "He can guard 94 feet and he's very strong, very aggressive."

McCants, Tar Heels Cruise To Win

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Rashanda McCants scored 18 points to lead six players in double figures and No. 5 North Carolina cruised to a 99-64 win over Georgia State on Monday night.

McCants continued her strong November. She has led North Carolina in scoring in four of its six games. On Sunday, she had a career-high 27 points in a victory against Syracuse, and she produced more offense and defense against the Panthers, dazzling the crowd by creating turnovers and finishing with layups. She also had eight assists.

ARIZONA STATE 84, YALE 38: Dymond Simon scored 17 points and sparked a 34-2 run in the first half to help No. 14 Arizona State beat Yale.

The 5-foot-5 Simon also grabbed five rebounds, had three assists and led eight different scorers during the first-half spurt that began after Yale scored two early baskets.

OHIO STATE 79, SOUTHERN 38: Star Allen scored 17 points and Marscilla Packer added 16 to lead No. 15 Ohio State to a win over Southern.
