Bulls Earn Tournament Berth
TAMPA - The University of South Florida men's soccer team earned its 12th-career bid into the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship on Monday. The Bulls (12-5-2) will host Colgate (9-5-5) in first-round action on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the USF Soccer Stadium.
USF's last appearance in the NCAA Tournament was in 2005, when the Bulls went 1-0-1.
Spartans To Face Washburn
TOPEKA, Kan. - The University of Tampa will attempt to defend its 2006 volleyball national championship in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight, which was awarded to Washburn University on Monday.
The Spartans will meet the host school on Nov. 29, at Washburn's Lee Arena. Each of the eight regional winners will play the first day, with the winners advancing to the semifinals on Nov. 30. The national championship is scheduled for Dec. 1.
USC Signs Lil' Romeo
LOS ANGELES - Lil' Romeo is headed to Southern California to play basketball.
The teenage hip-hop performer signed a national letter-of-intent to attend USC on Monday at a news conference held at a posh hotel near Beverly Hills.
Lil' Romeo, an actor and rapper whose full name is Percy Romeo Miller, is currently a senior guard at Beverly Hills High. He averaged 13.9 points and 5.6 assists last season. His father, hip-hop mogul Master P, had tryouts with two NBA teams in the 1990s.
One recruiting service ranks Miller, a 6-0, 170-pounder, among the top 15 prep point guards in the country.
Tyson Gets 1 Day In Jail
MESA, Ariz. - Mike Tyson could have received more than four years in prison. He left the courtroom having to serve all of one day in an open-air jail.
The former heavyweight champion was sentenced Monday for cocaine possession and driving under the influence.
Sprinters Win Owens Award
INDIANAPOLIS - Sprinters Tyson Gay and Allyson Felix were named the winners of the Jesse Owens Award as the outstanding U.S. track and field athletes of 2007.
It's the first time Gay has been given the honor and the second time for the 21-year-old Felix.
U.S. Upset In Men's Volleyball
MATSUMOTO, Japan - Puerto Rico upset the United States at the men's volleyball World Cup, posting its first win over the U.S. team in 30 years.
Puerto Rico won in four sets, 25-21, 20-25, 25-17, 25-22. The last time Puerto Rico beat the United States was at the 1977 Norceca Championships.
Mathis Traded To Galaxy
SECAUCUS, N.J. - The New York Red Bulls sent all-time leading scorer Clint Mathis to the Los Angeles Galaxy for a third-round pick in the MLS SuperDraft.
The trade gives the 30-year-old Mathis a chance to play with David Beckham.
YOUTH SOCCER: At Land O' Lakes, Wolfpack Blue SC of Fountain Valley, Calif., eliminated RSL Florida from the United Soccer League's Super-Y Nationals in the semifinals. A goal in the 79th minute by Annie Wethe gave the Wolfpack a 2-1 win against the Tampa-based under-17 girls squad.
FSU Women Third At NCAAs
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - With sophomore Susan Kuijken's individual third-place performance, the No. 2-ranked Florida State women's cross country squad - led by former University of South Florida coach Bob Braman - finished third with 236 points at the NCAA Championships. Stanford won the women's title and Oregon was second.
FSU's No. 23-ranked men finished 20th. Oregon beat Iona for the men's team title.
