TAMPA - Sickles sophomore point guard Jordan Davis said he expected to perform well in his team's season opener against Chamberlain on Monday.
But after scoring a game-high 19 points with seven rebounds, four steals and four assists to lead his team to a 55-45 win against the Chiefs, Davis said he surprised himself.
"I don't know if it's going to be a night to night thing, but with the loss of former center Matt Johnson, I'm going to have to step up," Davis said.
"That was one of the best offensive efforts I've seen from him in a long time," Sickles coach Renaldo Garcia said.
Darian Conner added 10 points and three rebounds while Kelvin Daniels finished with 11 points, nine of which came from beyond the 3-point line, and two assists for Sickles (1-0).
Senior guard Dantavis Adkins led Chamberlain (0-1) with 13 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals.
"I love playing against Adkins because I know he's going to bring it," Davis said. "I know I have to bring my game next time we play."
Chamberlain led 28-23 at the half and jumped out to a 31-24 led with a 3-pointer from Adkins. Davis and Daniels put on a 9-3 run for Sickles to close the gap to 34-32 and with a basket from Conner, tied the game at 34.
Sickles was able to close out the win at the free-throw line.
