A below the belt fact

Did you hear the one about the outsourcing of American jobs? Actually, it is about as funny as if you were to throw a boomerang into the air only to have it come back and hit you in the back of the head. If nothing else, it will surely make you roll your eyes. Or maybe you will roll hysterically in the unemployment line.

Believe it or not, one of the largest import nations for jobs that used to be done by American workers, India, is now outsourcing some of those jobs to Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay. For just one outsource company, the number is approximately 5,000 jobs. Morocco, China, Portugal, and Saudi Arabia are just a few other locations. In the next few years, another 5,000 software development jobs will be heading for Guadalajara, Mexico.

And now for the below-the-belt punch line: Some of those outsourced jobs to India are being outsourced to "low cost" areas in the United States of America!

Laugh, and the world laughs with you. Cry, and American and Indian corporate executives will turn the other way and count their profits.

Media should

stop playing safe

Reading the papers last weekend, I had hoped to read articles featuring the Veterans of the Vietnam War, Korean War, Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom or Iraqi Freedom. But I saw, again, another story of World War II Veterans. I mean no disrespect and highly appreciate the service of those veterans, but I think it is time to feature veterans from the less "popular" wars.

I think it's safe for the media to just reflect on WWII veterans. Political opinions aside, the veterans from the less popular wars should also be honored for their services to our country with the same respect given WWII veterans.

I would like to see the media stop playing it safe.

She didn't like Marlette's
Hillary Clinton cartoon

I am not a Democrat or a Republican; I'm an Independent and there are many of us.

Therefore, what I am writing to you about is a matter of poor taste and that concerns all. Your cartoon that you ran on Nov. 6 regarding Hillary Clinton was a perfect example of stupidity. Andy Marlette should be ashamed of himself. My husband was an editorial cartoonist for 10 years in Hernando County. He won second prize for "Best Cartoonist" in Florida.

I remember people coming to see him to do a cartoon about a politician that they didn't agree with or didn't like. Fred always refused.

If and when Marlette wins No. 1 in this country, I bet that "ego" in Hillary's eye would be his.

Congratulations to

School officials

With reference to the article published in Hernando Today about Elyse Di Martino's reaction to the singing of the National Anthem in Spanish at a celebration of Hispanic Heritage month at J.D. Floyd Elementary School in Spring Hill, I was very surprised and sad to read this story. I wonder how many persons also had such a negative reaction.

My personal opinion as a member of the Hispanic American community of Hernando County is to thank the school officials and congratulate them for their beautiful gesture. I feel very proud that the Spanish language is recognized since it is the second most spoken language in the United States and also that the Hispanic children who attend that school know what they are singing and can understand our National Anthem and not just repeat the words. For those children who only speak English, it is also a good lesson because it is a great advantage to be bilingual and this could help them to learn to speak Spanish.

Mrs. Di Martino, teach your children to be united and love their neighbor and feel proud that our National Anthem could be understood by other persons who do not speak your language. Wouldn't you like to have the National Anthem of your ancestors be sung in English at such an important occasion?

Again, I congratulate the school officials for their excellent demonstration in recognizing the Hispanic American community at such an important celebration. Please keep up the good work, and thank you.
