VENICE - A 5-year-old boy was accidentally shot in the stomach by a ricochet bullet on Wednesday at the Venice Police gun range.
The boy was airlifted to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg. The injury is not life threatening, according to Venice police.
The boy and his mother were at the gun range to pick up the boy's father, a Venice police officer who was finishing his annual certification, according to Venice City Manager Marty Black.
The boy was in the training room when he was hit by the bullet that ricocheted. The range is off of Pinebrook Road.
The names have not been released.
The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office will conduct the investigation because it involves a Venice Police officer.
