UT Women Awaken, Defeat Ohio Valley

TAMPA - Timely defense and a spate of turnovers helped spark a sluggish University of Tampa offense to a 79-54 victory against Ohio Valley University at the Bob Martinez Sports Center.

The Spartan women (2-1) spent the first several minutes of their home opener struggling to score points less than 48 hours after returning from a California road trip.

The pace of the game changed about six minutes in after Spartans guard Angela Guiu drew a charge, which seemed to open the floodgates on both ends for UT.

"I guess you could say that sparked us," said Spartans coach Tom Jessee, who notched his 100th win at UT. "That's one of those things you don't find on a stat sheet and we've been talking about kids stepping up and taking some charges."

FLORIDA STATE 77, FORDHAM 42: Mara Freshour scored 25 points to lead short-handed 20th-ranked Florida State (4-1) past visiting Fordham (0-4).

Freshour scored Florida State's first 10 points, and finished 10 of 13 from the floor, including five of seven from the 3-point line.

FSU shot 54 percent from the field and held the Rams (0-4) to 27 percent.

MARYLAND 98, LOYOLA (MD.) 50: Seldom-used freshman forward Emery Wallace scored 18 points, Drey Mingo had 16, and No. 3 Maryland (6-0) placed six players in double figures with a win against in-state foe Loyola (2-2).

NOTRE DAME 94, CENTRAL MICHIGAN 41: Freshman Becca Mruszewski scored a career-high 13 points to lead six Notre Dame players in double figures.

The No. 23 Fighting Irish (3-1) pulled away from the Chippewas (2-2) for good with a 20-0 run in the final six minutes of the first half.
