GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Bill Miller.
Offshore fishing has been good when the weather has allowed anglers to go out. Captain Tom Zeisman guided Arik Bergerman to a 66.6 pound wahoo 50 miles offshore. The fish took a large blue runner slow-trolled over a ledge in 150 feet of water. The trip also produced a 31-pound kingfish.
Captain Larry McGuire has been putting his clients onto large gag and red grouper, along with mangrove snapper, in deep water off Anna Maria. Fishing with McGuire, Purple Heart veteran Joe Jago caught a 30-pound gag and a 20-pound red last weekend using live pinfish for bait.
The Anclote power plant produced good ladyfish and jack action when the temperature dropped a little last week. Geoffrey Adams caught a 35-inch snook "dead sticking" a Gulf shrimp. A few pompano were also reported in the warm water run-off.
Mackerel and bonito are all over Tampa Bay. Scott and Zachary Taylor caught all they could handle off MacDill Air Force Base chasing the birds and casting gold spoons into the striking fish.
Captain Rob Gorta put the "Hooked on Fishing" film crew on some great redfish action this week. Fishing around Fort DeSoto using fresh-cut greenbacks produced non-stop action during the incoming tide.
Captain Bill Miller hosts "Hooked on Fishing" on Thursdays and Sundays from 7-8 p.m., and Fridays and Mondays from 11 a.m.-noon on Bright House Networks Catch 47.
