KANSAS CITY, Mo. - What drove Priest Holmes out of the NFL is something most football players try to drive out of their thoughts.
They know it's a dangerous, violent endeavor that can leave them unable to walk. Holmes, after making one of the most improbable comebacks in NFL history, decided that as much as he loves the game, it wasn't worth the risk of paralysis.
So the former Pro Bowl running back retired on Wednesday, thanking the Kansas City Chiefs and the NFL for all they had done.
"I had to look at the situation for what it is," he said.
Testaverde To Start For Rest Of The Season
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - For weeks, Carolina Panthers coach John Fox has been careful not to name a No. 1 quarterback, saying the decision to use Vinny Testaverde or David Carr would be based on their health.
After both players practiced Wednesday, Fox made it clear: He's going with the 44-year-old.
Ravens' Rolle Brings Epilepsy Under Control
OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Baltimore Ravens cornerback Samari Rolle was on the inactive list for six games this season. His malady was described by the team with one word: illness.
Rolle used a different word to explain it.
Epilepsy.
Rolle kept it a secret for two months because he had trouble finding the right medication to keep his disorder in check.
"It's under control now. That's the main thing," he said. "Right now, I'm not scared."
BILLS: Rookie running back Marshawn Lynch missed practice because of a sprained left ankle.
DOLPHINS: Ricky Williams participated in his first full day of practice, his status for Monday's game still unclear.
RAMS: Offensive lineman Todd Steussie re-signed with the team to fill a void on a banged-up line.
RAVENS: Defensive end Trevor Pryce was placed on injured reserve with a torn pectoral muscle.
SEAHAWKS: Shaun Alexander was unable to practice, meaning he would not play Sunday when Seattle travels to St. Louis.
Coach Mike Holmgren has said Alexander will not return to a game until he practices consecutively on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
TITANS: Running back Chris Henry dropped his appeal and started serving his four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.
