Journeying back from Chicago on Interstate 75, I noticed an interstate sign stating that Tampa was about 12 miles further than St. Petersburg. This was repeated at least three other times while traveling south (with different mileage, of course).
So I called the Florida Department of Transportation office in Tallahassee. A nice woman advised me that it was a "political" thing as a favor from the governor to the mayor of St. Pete, and that it designates that St. Pete is a "destination" city. I'm sure this disparity confuses all who see it, although the FDOT lady said that only Tampans called in wonderment; not one visitor did.
Maybe they think it's just a manifestation of the "duh" in our name.
