PORT RICHEY - It's refreshing to see players and coaches who participate in a sport "for the love of the game." Such is the case with the Lady Cobra Soccer Club.
Their registration fee of $175 is about a tenth of what other clubs in the Tampa area charge. One reason for the low fee is the coaches and league officials do not receive compensation.
"We are all volunteers. Our goals are individual and team improvement. We also teach lessons regarding sportsmanship and teamwork as our rewards for the hours on the practice field," said head coach Chris Swezey.
Swezey's squad, which practices in Hudson, has attracted some of the top varsity soccer players from Ridgewood, Hudson, River Ridge and Springstead. The team was the Region Cup winner in 2005 and 2006. This year, it advanced to the final four of the President's Cup, which attracts top teams nationwide.
Now, the team needs financial support to pay for its Score at the Shore Tournament in February. Wal-Mart, Publix and Chocolates By Michelle will be the corporate sponsors as the Lady Cobras hold a fundraiser today at Gulfview Square Mall on U.S. Highway 19 in Port Richey from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
If the team collects sufficient funds to participate in its tournament, the players will get the opportunity to display their talents in front of college coaches and scouts. Your donations could help a young athlete go to college.
