TAMPA - Missed opportunities, a bizarre goal and a flurry of late action in front of the USF net threatened to end the Bulls' men's soccer season.
But Yohance Marshall's finish of a cross from Kevon Neaves in the 73rd minute Friday night was enough to give USF a 2-1 victory against Colgate in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the USF Soccer Stadium. The Bulls (13-5-2) will play at No. 14-seed Akron (15-3-2) on Wednesday.
"I didn't think we were as sharp as we could be," said Bulls coach George Kiefer, "but at the same time, it's a good sign to not be as sharp as you can be and get a win in the NCAA Tournament."
Neaves' cross, which curled in from right to left and landed right in front of the goal, was set up by a short corner from Tony Taylor.
"I kind of hit it between my legs, and luckily it went in," Marshall said of his second goal of the season.
The Bulls dominated the first half, holding Colgate without a shot on goal, but only mustered a 1-0 lead - on a goal from 12 yards out by Jason Devenish.
Colgate tied it in the second half on a soft 30-yard shot by Glenn Volk that glanced off USF goalkeeper Diego Restrepo's hands and into the net.
Minutes later, Restrepo left the 18-yard box and failed to secure the ball, leaving the net open. But Marshall drifted back to knock away a shot.
Colgate had chances to tie in the final two minutes. A header by the Raiders' Matt Leach glanced off the left post, and a follow-up shot at an open net missed wide left.
FLORIDA ST. 4, TEXAS 0: Sanna Talonen scored the winning goal, and Mami Yamguchi had a goal and two assists as the Seminoles women advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.
