GAINESVILLE - Tanae Davis-Cain scored 27 points, Shante Williams added 11 points and six assists and No. 20 Florida State beat Florida 81-78 on Friday night.
Davis-Cain was 10 of 20 from the field and five of 10 from 3-point range, carrying the Seminoles (5-1) much of the game.
Williams and Jacinta Monroe took over down the stretch, though.
Monroe had two big baskets in a 9-0 run that turned a 65-64 advantage into a double-digit lead with about 3 minutes to play.
The Gators (3-2) sliced into the lead on Sha Brooks' 3-pointer, followed a short time later by Marshae Dotson's two layups.
Florida trimmed it to 78-76 with 41.5 seconds to play, but Williams answered with a driving layup.
Williams and Mara Freshour each made a free throw in the final seconds, but the misses gave the Gators a chance to tie. Depree Bowden's 30-footer at the buzzer, however, hit the side of the backboard.
Dotson led Florida with 22 points and 15 rebounds.
TAMPA 57, WEST GEORGIA 54: The Spartans (4-1) won their fourth straight game, defeating the Wolves (3-1) on the first day of the West Georgia Thanksgiving Classic.
Sheena Walton led UT with a game-high 26 points, seven rebounds and a season-high six blocked shots.
Tampa concludes play at the Classic today against No. 11 Valdosta State at 1:30 p.m.
Men
TAMPA 92, VALDOSTA ST. 81: Senior Jeremy Black scored a career-high 30 points as the Spartans (2-1) beat the Blazers (3-2) in the opening game of the Eckerd Classic.
Jonathon Ball (19), Chris Evans (13) and Chris King (11) also scored in double digits for UT, which shot a season-high 58.5 percent from the field.
Black led Tampa with 16 rebounds while King, a senior, pulled down a career-best 10. Rashad Callaway dished out eight assists.
Tampa faces Puerto Rico-Pio Piedras today at 5:30 p.m.
KANSAS ST.73, UCF 71: Freshman Michael Beasley had 30 points, Jacob Pullen added 19 and No. 18 Kansas State beat Central Florida (2-2) in the Old Spice Classic at Lake Buena Vista.
Clent Stewart made two free throws and Darren Kent hit a 3-pointer to put Kansas State (4-1) ahead 70-65 four minutes into overtime.
Jermaine Taylor had 20 points, Dave Noel scored 15 and Mike O'Donnell added 14 for Central Florida, which forced overtime after overcoming a double-digit second-half deficit.
