Artists Unite To Assist Girls With Cancer

SAN ANTONIO - The Artists for Humanity production of "The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber," scheduled for Friday at San Antonio Community Church, promises musical samplings from classics such as "The Phantom of the Opera," "Cats" and "Jesus Christ Superstar."

In addition to these live vocal and instrumental performances, guests will enjoy gourmet cookies and coffees, as well as a silent auction and drawings that will feature original artwork, spa packages, floral arrangements and other items.

Proceeds from the performance will benefit the Grimes family of Land O' Lakes. David and Amber Grimes have two daughters, 8-year-old Lily and 2 1/2 -year-old Carlie, battling brain cancer.

"These two precious little girls, and this family, need a lot of help," said Dolores Riego de Dios, who founded Artists For Humanity in 1993. "They're not only facing cancer. The girls' father lost his job, because he spent so much time away from work taking his daughters to get treatment. The family lost its home, and also has two young sons to take care of."

This isn't the first time that Artists For Humanity, a group of nine area vocalists and musicians who individually have performed everywhere from Boston with the Boston Symphony Orchestra to the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, have helped out. During their 14-year history, they have performed benefit concerts for Habitat For Humanity, Hernando-Pasco Hospice, various homeless shelters and a local cancer patient.

"When I heard about this family, I immediately wanted to do an Artists For Humanity fundraiser for them," said Riego de Dios.

The San Antonio and Land O' Lakes Rotary clubs will present "The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber," presented by Artists For Humanity, at 7:30 p.m. Friday at San Antonio Community Church, 31251 State Road 52 in San Antonio.
