Kim Carpenter, Berkeley Prep, Jr.
Carpenter was one of the main reasons the Bucs advanced to the 1A state tournament for the first time since 2003, proving to be the team's most consistent player in the postseason. She claimed individual medalist honors at the District 14 tournament and finished seventh at the Region 5 tournament a week later. At state, Carpenter shot 82-83 in tough conditions to finish tied for 28th, a team best.
Kelsey Gibson, King, So.
Gibson, a home-schooled student, joined the Lions just before the season and continued the stellar play she displayed in previous seasons with Tampa Prep. After a productive regular season, Gibson was one of only two players to shoot under par at the 2A-District 11 tournament, firing a 1-under 71 to take second and qualify for regionals as an individual. She followed with an 82 at the Region 4 tournament a week later to finish 12th.
Alex Milan, Sickles, Fr.
Milan burst onto the scene quickly in her first high school season and never slowed. During the regular season, she helped the Gryphons set a team record for lowest nine-hole total, and was equally impressive in the postseason. Milan, a first-team All-Western Conference pick, won the 2A-District 10 tournament with an even-par 72 and finished third at the Region 4 tournament with a 2-over 74, missing a state berth by one stroke.
Julie Rolfe, East Bay, Sr.
Rolfe proved to be one of the area's most consistent golfers, and her team benefited greatly from her strong play. After leading the Indians to an undefeated regular season, Rolfe shot a team-best 83 to finish tied for fourth and help the Indians win the 2A-District 11 title. One week later, Rolfe, a first-team All-Western Conference selection, finished fourth at the Region 4 tournament, missing a state berth by three strokes.
Amy West, Durant, Jr.
West was one of the area's most improved golfers, and she rode a hot streak toward the end of the season all the way to the state tournament. West won the 2A-District 11 tournament with a 4-under 68 and took second at the Region 4 tournament with a 1-over 73, securing an individual berth to the 2A state tournament. At state, West, a first-team All-Western Conference pick, finished tied for 16th.
Shena Yang, Wharton, Jr.
Yang, a first-team All-Western Conference selection, led the Wildcats to an undefeated regular season and a return trip to the 2A state tournament. Yang took third in District 11 with a 1-over 73, but rebounded to take medalist honors at the Region 4 tournament with a career-best 5-under 67. At state, Yang again was the area's best girls finisher, shooting 74-75 to finish in a tie for sixth overall, the second year she has finished sixth at state.
Coach of the Year: Tom Shea, Berkeley Prep
Shea's Bucs won their final nine matches during the regular season and never slowed down, capturing a District 14 title and finishing second in Region 5 to advance to the 1A state tournament for the first time since 2003 (the team finished 15th). By the way, Shea also coached the boys team, which reached the state tournament for the first time since 2002.
