Trout Action Has Been Good

Published: November 25, 2007

GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Fred Everson.

The weather was good last week, although it got windy Thanksgiving night. There was a big school of 12- to 15-pound jacks terrorizing baitfish in the Little Manatee River earlier in the week, but they have disappeared. It probably has something to do with the water temperature, which was back up to 69 degrees. The next cold snap should put them in the river.
Captain Marc Noe reports good catch-and-release trout action. He has been fishing the deeper grass flats off Pinellas Point, Cockroach Bay and Joe Island. He said there were some ladyfish, bluefish and Spanish mackerel in the mix. Soft plastic baits were most effective on the trout.

Captain Chet Jennings and I waded the flats on a blustery Friday morning trying to hook a redfish with our fly rods. There were plenty of fish on the flats south of Sand Key, and plenty of other fishermen as well, despite the windy conditions. I threw at a lot of tails and made several casts good enough to catch fish, but nothing ate my fly. Good wade fishing tides will continue in the morning hours through Wednesday.

Captain Larry Malinoski recently had a good day trolling for grouper in the bay. He caught several in the 10-pound class and released a goliath.
