Finally, An AFC West Victory

Published: November 26, 2007

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Wake the town and tell the people. The Oakland Raiders have won an AFC West game.
Justin Fargas and LaMont Jordan each rushed for a touchdown and the defense came up with a big stop on fourth down, lifting the Raiders to a 20-17 victory against Kansas City on Sunday and snapping a 17-game losing streak in the division.

Oakland hadn't beaten anybody in their division since a 25-24 squeaker against Denver on Nov. 28, 2004, the longest ongoing streak of divisional futility in the NFL.

Fargas had 139 yards on 22 carries for the Raiders (3-8), who also snapped a six-game skid overall and a nine-game losing streak to the Chiefs.

Kansas City (4-7) got a huge day from rookie Kolby Smith, who rushed for 150 yards and two touchdowns after languishing on the third team behind Larry Johnson and Priest Holmes all season. But Smith failed on fourth-and-1 from the Raiders 23 when he slammed over left guard and lost a yard.

The Raiders took over on their own 24 with 4:22 to go and the Chiefs never touched the ball again. Fargas slammed into the line for gains of 12 and 11 yards on consecutive plays and then Daunte Culpepper hit Ronald Curry for 10 yards.

After K.C. called a time out, the Raiders iced their first victory of any sort since Oct. 21 when Fargas ran for 21 yards.

The Chiefs unsuccessfully challenged the spot right before they failed on fourth down, costing them a valuable timeout.

It was the fourth straight loss for the Chiefs, who nevertheless discovered their running back situation isn't as bleak as they'd thought. With Johnson sidelined a third straight game with a foot injury and Holmes having retired at midweek, Smith got his first start since being drafted in the fifth round last spring.
