MILWAUKEE - Antitrust regulators are seeking additional information from SABMiller Plc and Molson Coors Brewing Co. regarding their plans next year to combine their U.S. operations, Miller Brewing Co. and Coors Brewing Co.
As a result, the federal waiting period for approval on the proposed joint venture will be extended.
That means a decision from antitrust regulators likely won't come until at least 30 days after SABMiller and Molson Coors provide the additional information to the Justice Department.
SABMiller and Molson Coors executives said that the request for additional information was expected.
Executives from both companies said they still plan to complete their joint venture by mid-2008.
"SABMiller and Molson Coors are still on track to reach final agreements by the end of 2007," Graham Mackay, chief executive of SABMiller in London, said in a statement.
The proposed combination, known as MillerCoors, was announced in October. It's designed to cut annual costs by $500 million, including the reduction of administrative and office employees.
It also would boost the combined market share.
