A woman was seriously injured by her pit bull during a family fight Sunday evening, Largo police said.
Shasta Smith was taken to Bayfront Medical Center for surgery after being bitten on the face and arm.
Police said Smith's boyfriend argued with his mother's friend John Hammock at 2198 Nolan Drive S. about 8:30 p.m. The argument escalated into a fight. Police said Smith tried to break up the fight and the dog attacked, possibly trying to defend Smith.
The dog bit Hammock on the leg. He was taken to Largo Medical Center for treatment.
Pinellas County Animal Services took the pit bull.
