DELAWARE CITY, Del. - A Delaware City fire official says a 43-foot lobster boat heading to Miami for the winter caught fire in the Delaware River, but the two people on board were able to escape unharmed on a dinghy.
It happened around 12:30 p.m. just south of Artificial Island.
Wally Poppe, Delaware City Fire Company first assistant chief, said the boat stopped Sunday morning in Cape May, N.J., to take on 500 gallons of fuel and it was on its way to Miami when the generator caught fire.
Poppe says some fuel leaked into the water, but it is unclear how much.
The U.S. Coast Guard and fire companies from Port Penn, Delaware City, Holloway Terrace and Goodwill responded.
By 3 p.m., firefighters were waiting for the boat to be towed to Delaware City, but it wasn't clear if the fire had been extinguished.
