CORAL GABLES - The Miami Hurricanes finished their 2007 season with a 28-14 loss to Boston College on Saturday, finishing with a 5-7 record, their worst since 1977.

WHAT WENT RIGHT: Sophomore WRs Sam Shields and Ryan Hill had another productive day as they led the Hurricanes in receiving, combining for seven receptions, 69 yards and two touchdowns. The two have been in and out of the lineup throughout the season due to disciplinary reasons.

Sophomore LB Darryl Sharpton led the defense with nine tackles.

The Canes stayed in the game until the fourth quarter when Boston College scored two touchdowns to put the game away.

WHAT WENT WRONG: Coach Randy Shannon decided to throw the ball downfield just before halftime instead of going into the locker room trailing 7-0 and getting the ball to start the second half.

Kenny Phillips intercepted Matt Ryan at the 12-yard line, halting the Boston College drive with 52 seconds remaining in the half, but on the next play Kyle Wright threw the ball 20 yards downfield and was intercepted by DeLeon Gause.
Boston College scored three plays later and took a 14-0 lead.

"You can say to yourself as a coach, 'Let's take the seven points and go into the locker room,'" Shannon said. "Try to get the three points and say you're down 7-3. If you miss it you're down just 7-0. Did I think we were going to throw an interception? No. Did the offense and team think we were going to throw an interception? No. We expected to get three or seven points."

Miami came back to tie the game at 14 in the fourth quarter, but allowed Boston College to strike on two big plays, resulting in 69 yards and a touchdown, in 23 seconds.

INJURY UPDATE: None to report.

CHALLENGE AHEAD: The Canes will begin investing their time on recruiting.

THEY SAID IT: "I didn't expect to win less than eight games. That's how I felt and I still feel the same way. We had a chance against North Carolina and North Carolina State, Georgia Tech. We had opportunities Saturday. I'm always going to have high standards and I don't think this program is going to have any lower standards." - Shannon
